Calypso

Calypso is a coconut retriever that came from the island of St Kitts. At only a few weeks of age, Calypso was diagnosed with a heart defect known as a PDA. Uncorrected, a PDA can lead to enlargement of the left side of the heart and leakage of fluid into the lungs, a syndrome known as congestive heart failure
(CHF). Closure of a PDA is the definitive, and curative, treatment. At this time, the procedure to close a PDA in veterinary patients is not available on the island of St Kitts.
We were contacted by students at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM) to see if we would be able to take on Calypso’s case. With the help of Outcast Rescue, we were able to not only
ensure that Calypso would get the medical care she needed, but that she would also find her forever home as well!
After months of planning and collaboration with the students at RUSVM, Calypso finally landed in the United States!! On Oct 20, 2021, Calypso was taken to the specialty hospital where her PDA was
successfully corrected.
Since the procedure, Calypso has been doing amazing! She is expected to live a normal healthy life! And
the best part- through this process, Calypso has found her forever home with emergency veterinarian  Dr Taylor Nehlsen. Dr Nehlsen is a graduate of St Georges University in Grenada and lives with Calypso’s new sister, also a coconut retriever!
